The Small Hydro differs from the usual hydroelectric plants for having installed capacity (power) between 1,1 MW and 30 MW and a water reservoir that contains up to 3 km2. These plants are installed in small and medium-sized rivers, causing less impact on the environment. For that reason, the small hydro is considered an even cleaner energy source than the big hydroelectric plants.
Rondinha Small Hydro is located in the city of Passos Maia, in western Santa Catarina, by Chapeco River. Operating commercially since 2014, the small hydro has 9,6 MW of installed power. Its energy generation capacity is enough to supply 18,5 thousand consumer units and a population of approximately 70 thousand people.
