Gladiadores called for the Brazilian Wheelchair Rugby Team

Athletes took part in training week

2020 started at full steam for the Gladiadores Curitiba Quad Rugby, a wheelchair rugby sports team from Paraná. The team’s activities returned on January 17th with a special motivation: the call made by ABRC (Brazilian Association of Wheelchair Rugby), the highest organization of the sport in the country.

Coach Marcelo Kamarowski and athletes James de Paula França, Raphael Demóstenes Cardozo, Anderson Kaiss and Tainá Melody Santos were part of the Brazilian Rugby Wheelchair Team delegation for a week of training, held between January 25th and 31st in the ANDEF center (Niteroi Association of the Physically Disabled) in Niteroi.

Carlos Kamarowski, technical coordinator of Gladiadores Quad Rugby, stressed the importance of the call to the Curitiba team. “Starting the year with four athletes called up (from a total of 12) is always important. They know that they are being watched by the Technical Commission of the National Team, specially in a year that we will have international competitions of the main team, in addition to an annual agenda of Brazilian and regional championships”. The team’s athletes have represented the national team before, at the Parapan American Games in Toronto, in 2015, and at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

The main goal of the call was observation of the athletes, technical and tactical training and assembly of the team that will participate in numerous commitments in 2020 – among them, the preparation for the paralympic games in Tokyo, whose qualifiers begin in March. Regarding the evolution of wheelchair rugby in the country, Carlos commented that the sport is expanding in Brazil. “We were in Rio 2016, but we have to evolve in front of European teams and our direct competitors in the Americas – USA and Canada. Today Brazil is ranked ninth in the world”.

Brazilian champions in 2013, the Gladiadores now occupy third place in the national ranking. In the Curitiba team calendar of activities, in addition to the ongoing work of service and training, are the team’s participation in the Brazilian Championship, Brazil Wheelchair Rugby Cup and also in the 9th edition of the Paradesportive Open Games of Paraná (Parajaps), among other national and international competitions.

The team has the support and incentive of Atlantic-CGN.
